Hallway Rugs. Depending on the size of the hallways in your home, you will likely need a long, narrow area rug - or runner - for this space. In order to achieve a balanced look and find the right size rug for your hallway, keep in mind that the rug you select should be two to four inches narrower than the width of your hallway and 18 to 24 inches shorter than your hallway's total length.
Room-Size Rugs. When choosing room-size rugs, a good rule of thumb is to measure the room and ensure there will be approximately 18 to 24 inches of space between the rug and the wall on each side. This will help you achieve a balanced look that is not crowded or overbearing. If you are using the rug to cover a hardwood floor, this also allows some of the beauty and sheen of the base flooring to add a touch of elegance to the room by providing your guests with a glimpse of the wood around the borders of the space.
There are other kinds of small carpets like rag, braided, sisal, chenille and shag made of various kinds of materials like cotton, silk, leather, wool and synthetic fibers. You can get area carpets for children with games and bright children's designs on them. You can get bath mats that are washable.
